Daily sunscreen?

Sunscreen is a very important step of any skincare routine and should always be the last product to apply in your morning routine. It helps to prevent dangerous skin cancer and is essential to fight premature skin aging due to sun damage. If you ask me, it’s the most effective thing you can do in terms of “anti-aging”. There’s not really something to keep your skin from aging and also, there is nothing wrong with mature skin. But we can still do our part to at least prevent premature aging and keeping our skin as healthy as possible.

Why do you need sunscreen?

In general you should get at least SPF 35, preferably more though. I like to choose products with SPF 45 or 50. This is an important aspect because you have to apply a certain amount of product to achieve this level of protection. Hence, the less protection the product offers, the higher the risk of not applying enough and getting any significant protection.

But I’m already using a BB cream/foundation with SPF 15, isn’t that sufficient? No, sadly it’s not sufficient at all. Like mentioned you would need to apply A LOT of that cream/foundation to even get the protection level of 15 and even if you did, SPF 15 is not enough to protect your skin. Powders with SPF are even more useless, because who would even apply that thick of a layer? And if you did, it would not give your skin a particularly nice look, so just do the sunscreen step properly and save your make up.

What I look for in a sunscreen

What do I look for in a sunscreen? Well, apart from giving me SPF 45 to 50 protection, I also prefer sunscreen that don’t actually feel like sunscreens. I have acne prone combination skin and like to wear some kind of base make up on most days. Whether that’s BB cream or a light foundation depends on my mood and my overall skin condition, but my sunscreen has to work beneath any kind of covering layer and not start crumbling on me. I like lightweight sunscreens that doesn’t leave an annoying whitecast or greasy feeling. The less work it takes to apply it the better. During the winter months it’s great to have a sunscreen with moisturizing effect to avoid any dry patches. And of course affordable options are always welcome.

Klairs Soft Airy UV Essence SPF50 PA+++ ~20€

This is my current sunscreen and one of my favorite products from the brand overall. The sunscreen ticks all of the mentioned boxes and comes in a huge size, so it lasts a decent amount of time. If you consider the time it lasts the price point is affordable as well, even though it’s not the most affordable option out there.
It applies effortlessly and does indeed feel soft and airy on the skin. I didn’t have anything to complain about yet and I’ll probably repurchase it.

Cosrx Aloe Soothing sunscreen SPF50 PA+++ ~12€

Another product that ticks all of the mentioned boxes. It feels a little more moisturizing than the other ones, so I would rather use it for colder months or even skip the moisturizing step if the routine is hydrating enough without it. The formulation is not as gentle as some of the others, but I didn’t get any irritations from it.

Secret Key Repairing Snail Sunscreen SPF50 PA+++ ~12€

A lovely lovely sunscreen not a lot of people talk about. Sadly, it seems to be underrated and I myself just got it out of curiosity and was amazed by the performance when I got it. If you are looking for the type of sunscreen I described and love snail mucin in your products, this is a sunscreen for you! It’s so smooth and softening, it’s hard to believe that it’s a sunscreen at all. Out of all the products mentioned I feel like this is the one with at least some level of soothing, a great feature for blemished skin to maximized your routine.

Ingredients: Water, Cyclopentasiloxane, Cyclohexasiloxane, Zinc Oxide, Dimethicone, Ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, Dimethicone, Titanium Dioxide, Aluminum Hydroxide, Stearic Acid, Butylene Glycol, Sodium Hyluronate, Cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 dimethicone, Isododecane, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Propylene Carbonate,  Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Snail Secretion Filtrate, Sorbitan Sesquioleate, Ceresin, Magnesium Sulphate, Disodium EDTA, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Flavour, 4 Methylbenzyl camphor.

I bought it on Jolse, but it looks like they don’t sell it anymore. I found it on a Swiss shop called ebeautyandcare so I don’t know if the product was discontinued and they’re just selling the remaining stock.

Missha All Around Safe Block Essence Sun SPF45 PA+++ ~10€

This is the most common product to be the entry door into the world of Asian sunscreen. It is very easy to find and was even available at the drugstore for a short amount of time. I’m not sure where it went, but I still think this is a great and easy staple to have. It works very well and didn’t cause me any breakouts. So while I’m not excited to repurchase it for now, I already used like 3 or 4 of these, it’s worth to try it if you haven’t already.

Shiseido Recipist UV Essence SPF50 PA+++ ~10€

Amazing lightweight sunscreen. Japanese sunscreens are just performing on a whole other level when it comes to an effortless formulation. It’s the most lightweight from this selection and feels divine to apply. The only downside to the product is the small size, as you go through it quickly, but other than that I love it. I was really sad when it was empty and I still want to get a repurchase and try more from the brand overall.
