pH = potential of hydrogen. pH is defined as the decimal logarithm of the reciprocal of the hydrogen ion activity. This is a chemical term, used to describe how acidic or alkaline / basic a water based solution is. The pH scale ususally ranges from 0-14. The lower the pH, the more acidic the solution, the higher the pH, the more alkaline the solution. Water has a pH of 7 and is neutral, this means it’s neither acidic nor alkaline. The ideal pH for skin is just below 5 (Source: Journal of cosmetic science, 2006)
