Adjusting Your Skincare Routine From Winter to Spring

How can you seasonally change your skincare routine?

Just like you change the types of clothes you wear as the seasons change, you should adjust your skincare routine to get the best results possible. The weather does have an effect on our skin and it’s important to reflect that within the choice of products we apply daily. In this blog post, we will have a look at how to approach changing your skincare routine, what you should change in specific and some products I like to introduce for spring.

Main points

  • For the transition from winter to spring, you should not only change the types of clothes you wear, but also adjust your skincare routine accordingly.
  • To adjust your skincare routine you should not change all products at once, but rather switch out product by product for a smooth and gentle transition.
  •  For me the warmer months are all about lightweight layers of hydration to keep the skin refreshed, relaxed and well-hydrated.
  • Play with textures and opt for lightweight toners, essences and face mists to create light but effective layers and seal the hydration in with a cooling gel.

Changing the routine product by product

Usually the transition will come naturally and whenever I use up a product I pick a new one to fit the weather and within time my skincare routine will be adapted. I prefer this approach to just switching up everything at once and be left with a number of open products.

There are exceptions when I will specifically take a product and decide to reintroduce it the next year, but that’s rare and I intend to keep it that way. Not only does it ensure I can use up all of my products at the same time and help me to stick to #1empty1newbie, it also helps my skin to adjust slowly and gently. Changing up too many products at the same time can be stressful and irritating. Therefore it might result in blemishes. It’s also possible that a certain product is causing your skin to breakout, but because you changed everything at once it’s impossible to tell which one it is!

Texture, not just on Tuesdays

Let’s talk texture. Essences, serums and ampoules which all fall into the same category and only differ in texture and ingredient concentration – with essence usually being the most lightweight and ampoule the richest. While you can find any of these for your specific skin type and needs, skin typically prefers more lightweight textures during spring and summer. Heavy layers may contribute to clogging the pores, irritate the skin or give you an overly oily finish.
So if you rely on rich serums and ampoules during the winter months, try a more lightweight essence or serum, especially for your morning routine. You can apply multiple layers of the same product if you feel like your skin needs more, this way you can keep it lightweight and still apply the amount of product you need. Thin and watery layers absorb fast and and work very well together.

Also remember to switch your moisturizer. I have combination skin, so I like to opt for lightweight gel type moisturizers. Creamier moisturizers may also work during the colder months, but once the temperatures start rising, I need to switch it up to avoid my T-zone acting up. Gels will still lock all of the hydration in, while keeping it lightweight and fresh. The gel texture can feel nicely cooling on the skin during the summer and create an additional soothing effect, so it’s perfect to introduce during spring. I really enjoy the Benton Aloe Propolis Soothing Gel (use code: ‘SKINSOUL’ for 2-5% off *affiliated*) or the Holika Holika 99% Aloe Soothing Gel (use code: ‘SKINSOUL’ for 2-5% off *affiliated*) for the daytime and the Klairs Midnight Blue Calming Cream (use code: ‘SKINSOUL’ for 2-5% off *affiliated*) for the night time.

Which products to choose?

You should always keep hydrating products in your skincare routine, as hydration is essential to keep it healthy and glowing. The most effortless layer of hydration for me is a face mist. You can just spray it on, which feels very refreshing as well, and don’t even have to do any patting to work it in. It’s fast, easy and it can’t get any more lightweight! My favorite face mist is the 100% grape water from Caudalie – it’s a bestseller for a reason. The mist is also very fine and it feels nice to spray it on. Some face mists are not fine enough and it almost feels like you’re splashing it onto your face, but this one is spot on. Other face mists I’ve enjoyed are the Honey Lemon Black Tea face mist from Atrue, the Aloe soothing & moisture face mist from Nature Republic (use code: ‘SKINSOUL’ for 2-5% off *affiliated*). Currently I’m using the All-in-one- mist from Hyggee (use code: ‘SKINSOUL’ for 2-5% off *affiliated*) and my first impression is very positive as well.

When it comes to the rest of my routine, I like to go back to some of my favorite products when I’m not trying out something new. Hyaluronic acid is an amazing ingredient as it can hold its own weight in water multiple times. The Japanese brand Hada Labo is a J-Beauty-classic and offers different types of hyaluronic-acid-essences, they’re affordable and effective. A little bit more pricey, but totally worth it: The MMHC by Niod from Deciem. MMHC stands for multi molecular hyaluronic complex. This product contains different sized hyaluronic acid types that are able to penetrate into different levels of the skin – hence providing a very broad hydration. This is the most elegant hyaluronic acid product I’ve tried to date and I love how plump and hydrated it makes the skin. I already repurchased it twice and I’ll keep repurchasing it.

Two all-rounders I can recommend for any time of the year for acne prone combination skin are the Klairs Supple Preparation Toner and the COSRX 96 Snail Mucin Power Essence (use code: ‘SKINSOUL’ for 2-5% off *affiliated*). You will read about these two a lot on my blog, but that’s just because they’re HG products for me. Hydrating, calming and helping to keep acne outbreaks at bay while healing active blemishes – they just cater to my skin concerns.

Conclusion

Through closely observing your skin and carefully choosing the products for your skincare routine, you can achieve a smooth transition from winter to spring. Stay hydrated, safe and healthy!
